It is the AI-era equivalent of a search result, with one important difference: a citation can happen without anyone clicking it.
Why It Matters for AI Visibility
Citations are the closest thing to a ranking signal that generative engines expose. If ChatGPT, Claude or Perplexity answers a question in your field and never names you, you are absent from that conversation regardless of where you rank in Google.
They also behave nothing like search impressions. A page can be cited repeatedly while generating almost no measurable search traffic, because the citation satisfies the user inside the assistant. Traditional analytics records that as silence.
Example
A Perplexity answer about llms.txt lists five numbered sources under the response. Each of those five is a citation. Being source three costs you nothing in ranking terms, but it puts your name in front of a user who never opened a search results page.
