Definition

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the practice of optimizing content so that generative engines — ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, AI Overviews — surface and cite it when they answer a question.

Why It Matters for AI Visibility

SEO optimizes for a list of links. GEO optimizes for a synthesized answer, and the two reward different things.

In search, a page competes for a position. In a generative answer, a page competes to be used: retrieved, parsed, trusted enough to be attributed. Keyword placement matters much less; structure, explicit claims and verifiable sourcing matter much more. A page can rank on page one and never be cited, and a page nobody ranks can be cited constantly because it happens to answer a narrow question cleanly.

GEO also has no reliable feedback loop yet. There is no rank tracker for “was I in the answer”, which is why measurement tends to be indirect — readiness scores, citation spot-checks, crawler access tests.

Example

The same page, two lenses:

  • SEO question: does it rank for “llms.txt generator”?
  • GEO question: if someone asks an assistant “how do I create an llms.txt file”, is this page one of the sources it names?
